Let’s talk about FINANCE…This is a conversation starter that I bet most of us have never used in our day to day life. For some, this can be a touchy or even borderline taboo subject. In many cases, people don’t even have a clue about their own finances.
So, let’s discuss this topic as if we were buying our first bottle of wine. Taking our time to appreciate all those notes and aromas that can be enjoyed along the ride when we taste it for the first time. Talking about money should not feel like a burden or a chore. Money is exciting and fun! When we talk about making money we kick the fun part another notch and if we talk about spending it we kick it even more. This can sound somewhat comical, but this is financial talk.
If you talk with your friends, partner, co-worker or family member on how you make and use your money, you are talking about finance, and you don’t even know it.
When you go to your favorite liquor store, supermarket or your designated place to acquire the wine of your choice you will probably find yourself starring at a variety of different wines. All different, from their taste, place of origin and even price. Just like wine that has a wide spectrum, finance is the same. You have a variety of topics, tools, methods, and both professional and personal experiences that make finance so interesting and in some cases scary.
The answer: Simple wine! Yes, simple wine! Remember the time you picked your first wine? You looked around, grabbed a couple of bottles and read them. Maybe you even talked to one of your friends for recommendations or even the store clerk. After all of this, you chose a wine, with a bottle that you liked and took a chance with the little information that you had in hand. Bought it and enjoyed it with some dinner or even better, with company.
Choosing to start a conversation on finance is just like choosing your first wine. Choose a simple wine! Choose a simple subject! Take a topic that you can feel comfortable and the person that you wish to talk with can feel just as secure as you do, if they never had wine before or in this case never talked about finance.
Simple topics like;
- Have you ever thought about making a budget?
- What methods do you use to save money?
- How do you plan for a vacation?
These simple questions or conversation starters are examples. Most of us have asked someone these and didn’t even know we were talking about finance. Yes, they can seem as if you are asking for advice but, they can help to start a great dialogue. In which you can share your opinions and what you do in your day to day life and compare with what others do.
So, if you read the questions and found yourself remembering a conversation you had with someone on those topics or a similar one, you’ve been talking about finance for a long time and didn’t know it.
My recommendation is, just like when you’ve had a couple of bottles of wine: you start to expand your knowledge and taste, moving to more sophisticated wines comes naturally. Do the same with finance!
Take your time.
Experiment a little.
Pour yourself a couple of glasses of wine.
Let the conversation flow.
